Poppy Pym
Abandoned as a baby at a travelling circus, Poppy Pym receives a loving – if slightly peculiar – education at the hands of her new family, a group of circus performers led by Ringleader, Madame Pym. Bright and capable, Poppy thrives in this unique upbringing, learning to horse ride, juggle, perform impressive acrobatics, and dazzle on the flying trapeze, while poring over the pages of her favourite books, ‘The Detective Dougie Valentine Mysteries’ in her free time. Little does she know that as her eleventh birthday arrives and the opportunity to receive a more traditional education at the prestigious Saint Smithen’s boarding school presents itself, that this new chapter will be the beginning of her own detective adventures.
I have had the idea for Poppy Pym in my head for such a long time now we really are the best of friends. Throughout my years at university I worked as a children's bookseller, both in Waterstones , Canterbury (probably the best Waterstones you'll ever visit - not biased at all!) and a lovely independent shop in a famous crooked house. I have always been a huge fan of children's literature, even making it an enormous part of my thesis, and writing my own book for children has been a lifelong dream. I entered the first Poppy Pym book, 'Poppy Pym and the Pharaoh's Curse', in the Montegrappa Scholastic Prize for New Children's Writing and I am absolutely thrilled to have won such a prestigious award. It was a complete surprise, and the start of a very exciting adventure for me and Poppy! Poppy is also being translated into lots of different languages all over the world.
